The journey from a raw, green coffee bean to the aromatic brew in your cup is a feat of chemistry and precision. While the origin of the bean provides the “DNA” of the flavor, it is the roast level that acts as the architect, shaping the final character of the coffee.
At our roastery, we treat roasting as an art form – balancing time and temperature to unlock the bean’s hidden potential.
1. Light Roast
Light roasts are removed from the heat shortly after the first crack. Because they spend the least amount of time in the roaster, they retain the most “origin character.”
- Flavor Profile: Bright, acidic, and complex. You’ll often taste floral notes (like jasmine), citrus, or stone fruits.
- The Look: Light brown, matte finish (no oil on the surface).
- Caffeine Tip: Contrary to popular belief, light roasts actually have slightly more caffeine by weight because fewer caffeine molecules are broken down by heat.
- Best For: Pour-over (V60/Chemex) or AeroPress. This method allows those delicate, tea-like nuances to shine.
2. Medium Roast
The most popular roast level globally, medium roasts sit in the “sweet spot.” They balance the bright acidity of the bean with the rich, caramelized sweetness of the roasting process.
- Flavor Profile: Smooth and balanced. Expect notes of milk chocolate, toasted nuts, caramel, and brown sugar.
- The Look: A richer, medium-brown color; still matte and non-oily.
- Best For: Drip coffee makers, French Press, or even a balanced Espresso. It’s the ultimate crowd-pleaser that works well with or without milk.
3. Dark Roast
Dark roasts are taken past the second crack. At this stage, the flavors of the roast begin to overtake the flavors of the bean.
- Flavor Profile: Bold, smoky, and low in acidity. You’ll find deep notes of dark chocolate, molasses, and even spicy hints like clove or black pepper.
- The Look: Dark chocolate to nearly black, with a shiny, oily surface.
- Best For: Espresso, Moka Pot, or milk-based drinks (Lattes/Cappuccinos). The bitterness of a dark roast cuts through the sweetness of milk beautifully, providing that classic “coffee” kick.
